Satellite Dish Repair...?
We have a satellite dish on our roof. The cable is cut, so that the connection can't be made. I believe it's the signal and power cable, you don't exactly plug a satelite dish into the wall. Is there a way to reconnect it without purchasing a new dish? I'm thinking if I cut back the cover and do the old fashion wire twisting it will restore most of the signal capacity, but obviously I want to repair it safely and effectively. Can anyone help me out with that? The signal wire inside the cover has lie a white glue or something filling in the space between it and the cover, presumably to preserve the signal as it travels the length of the cable. I thought to just tape the cable back together because the wire isn't damaged other than being cleanly sliced, and when I checked to see that, I could feel the signal wire meet with either severed end, it's a thick wiring so it was like knocking two marbles together...TIA
Taping it together will not be a satisfactory repair, the signal losses would be horrendous. You need 2 "F" type plugs and a back to back "F" type socket. The inner needs to be stripped back to reveal about 1cm of the solid copper and the outer should be stripped to a few mm behind http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm (don't worry about the silicon grease if its indoors). F connectors simply screw onto the cable, no soldering required so attach one F connector to each half of the cable and screw the plugs into the back to back socket. You should just about get change out of a fiver for two plugs and the socket.
